For people who are not developers
Use AI on WordPress without code. Describe the result, then review a draft.
You need a WordPress site, an AI app you already talk to, and a clear idea of what you want. GoBuildWP connects the two, so instead of receiving code to paste somewhere, you get a finished draft in your own editor, built with the tools already on your site.
Free plugin, no account, No terminal needed, Setup guide
Representative first session. Behaviour matches GoBuildWP Free 1.18.6; the site is an example.
The honest version
What this is, in plain words
A chat without a configured site connection can describe a page but cannot apply GoBuildWP operations. Connect a supported client, select Read Only first and inspect one known page before authorizing an edit. Check what site data your chosen AI provider receives.
The plugin gives your AI app a direct connection to your site, with a fixed list of things it is allowed to do, decided on your site rather than in the chat. You describe the result; the app requests supported operations, and you review the result.
Most people start with one of three sites: a business website built with AI for a shop or practice, a portfolio website that shows your work with proper credits, or a membership site around a plugin you already chose. Each has a brief you can copy and fill in with plain words.
Your first session
Six steps, in order
Follow these steps on one draft page, then verify the saved result in its native editor and browser.
A vague ask gets a vague site
- Gets you a shrug
- “Make me a nice website for my bakery.” No pages, no audience, no look, no goal: the app has to guess all of it.
- Gets you a site
- “Five pages for a neighbourhood bakery: home, our bread, wholesale orders, about, contact. Warm and plain, cream and brown, one strong photo per page. Main action is a wholesale enquiry form. Everything stays a draft.”
Take a backup, or use a staging copy
The one step people skip and regret. Your host's control panel usually has both.
Install GoBuildWP Free
Activating it switches the abilities on for the address your site has right now. Check the settings screen shows your real domain, and set Confirmation mode to "A person approves" if you want to OK deletes yourself.
Connect your AI app
Copy the connection from GoBuildWP's Connect screen into ChatGPT, Claude or whichever app you use, and approve it in WordPress.
Ask a question, in Read Only
"Describe the pages on this site and which plugins are active." Nothing can change while the profile is Read Only.
Ask for one small thing
Switch to Production Safe and ask for a new draft page with three sections.
Open the draft in your editor
If it looks right, you now know what a bigger request will produce.
The safety net
Three things protect you by default
You do not have to configure these. They are how the plugin arrives.
Choose your access before connecting
After activation, inspect AI Abilities and the configured domain, then explicitly select Read Only before connecting. Check the released setup defaults rather than assuming every ability starts disabled.
Drafts, not publishing
New pages and posts default to draft. Publishing needs an explicit instruction and the connected user's publishing capability; review the saved draft before authorizing it.
Dangerous tools are simply absent
Under the default profile, running code, editing files and reaching the database are not blocked with a warning; those tools never appear in the list at all.
More for first-timers
What it costs to use AI on WordPress without code
GoBuildWP Free costs nothing and needs no account with us. The costs that do exist sit elsewhere. Your AI app has to support connecting to outside tools (often called connectors, integrations or MCP servers), and some apps only allow that on a paid plan, so check your app's own help pages before you start. Your WordPress host has to run WordPress 6.9 or newer and PHP 8.0 or newer, which most current hosting does, and you can see both under Tools, Site Health in wp-admin. GoBuildWP Pro is only worth buying later, if the job you want needs a page builder module, WooCommerce beyond simple product edits, or form and SEO plugins.
Picking an AI app if you do not have one yet
Use the app you already pay for or are comfortable with; the plugin works the same behind each one. If you are choosing from scratch, a desktop or web chat app is easier than the coding tools developers use, because you connect it once and then just type. There are step-by-step guides for Claude Desktop and ChatGPT, and the setup guide lists the others. Whatever you choose, remember that what you ask and what the site sends back pass through that company's service, so do not paste customer details into the chat you would not want stored there.
Words you will see, and what they mean
- Ability: one thing the AI app is allowed to ask your site to do, such as list pages or create a draft. Your AI app may call it a tool.
- Safety profile: the setting in WordPress that decides which abilities exist at all. Read Only lets the app look but not touch. Production Safe, the usual setting, allows normal editing but hides code, files and the database. Developer Full Access is for developers on test sites.
- Confirmation: an extra step before something that deletes or replaces work goes ahead. Out of the box the AI app confirms on its own; to make it a question for you, switch Confirmation mode to "A person approves" in GoBuildWP's settings.
- Change list: GoBuildWP's record of each change it made, with an undo button for the ones that can be undone.
- OAuth sign-in: the usual way to connect. Your AI app opens a WordPress page, you log in and approve, and no password is copied anywhere.
- Application Password: a separate password WordPress makes for one app, used only when an app cannot do the sign-in. You can delete it from your user profile at any time.
Five first jobs that are hard to get wrong
Each of these works in GoBuildWP Free and either reads only or makes a small change you can see straight away. Type them as they are, then change the details.
- "List every page on this site, which are drafts, and when each was last changed."
- "Find images in the media library that have no alt text, suggest a short description for each, and wait for me before saving any."
- "Show me the comments waiting for moderation and tell me which look like spam. Do not delete anything."
- "Write a 600-word draft post about our autumn opening hours, in a friendly tone. Leave it as a draft."
- "Add a link to the Contact page at the end of the main menu, then tell me how to undo it."
When something does not go to plan
- The app says it has no WordPress tools: in GoBuildWP's settings, check that the abilities are switched on and the site's domain is set, then remove and re-add the connection in your app.
- It cannot connect at all: some security plugins and firewalls block outside apps. GoBuildWP's troubleshooting screen in wp-admin can test the connection, and the troubleshooting guide covers the common causes.
- You asked for a change and cannot see it: new pages are drafts, so look under Pages, Drafts. If you changed a published page, a caching plugin may still be showing the old copy; clearing the cache usually fixes it.
- It changed something you did not want: ask "List the last five changes you made and undo the one on the About page." If that change cannot be undone, the app will say so, and that is when the backup from step one earns its keep.
Questions
The ones people ask first
Do I need to know what MCP means?
No. MCP is the language your AI app and your website use to talk to each other. You install the plugin, add one connection in your AI app, and after that you type normal sentences.
Will it break my site?
The default profile, Production Safe, removes the riskiest actions outright: running code, touching files, reaching the database, installing plugins. Pages are created as drafts. Deletes are still allowed under that profile. They need a confirmation, but by default the AI app gives that confirmation itself. To approve deletes yourself, set Confirmation mode to "A person approves" on GoBuildWP's Settings screen (Pro's approval queue is the other way), or keep the site on Read Only, where nothing can change.
Do I need to buy anything to try it?
No. GoBuildWP Free is a real plugin, not a trial: it connects your AI app and covers core WordPress work, including Elementor edits. Pro adds the deep modules for page builders, WooCommerce, forms and fields.
What if I do not have a page builder?
Free can compose and edit pages with WordPress's block editor, as well as manage posts, menus, media, categories and comments. Block-theme templates depend on an appropriate block theme. Elementor and other supported builders have their own operations and edition requirements; you do not need a separate builder for the core block workflow.
Can I undo something it did?
Supported changes are recorded, and reversible ones can be rolled back from the change list. Drafts mean most work never reaches visitors in the first place. Take a backup before your first real run anyway.
Start with one draft page you can inspect.
Install the free plugin, connect your AI app, and ask it to describe your site back to you before it changes a thing.
