WordPress MCP security

WordPress MCP security: treat the agent as a caller, not an authority.

An AI client can ask for anything. A secure WordPress MCP server decides on the site what each call may do, as which WordPress user, and keeps a record. Prompts, pasted pages and model mistakes cannot change those rules.

Is WordPress MCP safe?

It is as safe as the server's rules and the credential you hand out. An MCP connection is a remote way to run code on your site, so the question is not whether the model behaves, but what WordPress will refuse when it does not.

It is reasonably safe when the client signs in as a dedicated least-privilege user over OAuth, the safety profile blocks what the work does not need, and writes are previewed and recorded. It is not safe when a client connects as your own administrator, with a password that never expires, on a profile that allows raw PHP.

Credentials

OAuth or Application Password: two very different blast radii

Most of a connection's security is decided by which credential you hand the client and how quickly it stops working without anyone stepping in.

PropertyOAuth 2.1 with PKCEApplication Password
Endpoint/wp-json/mcp/wppilot-oauth/wp-json/mcp/wppilot

LifetimeAccess token one hour, refresh token fourteen days; the code is single use and expires in a minuteNever expires until revoked

Revoke fromConnected Apps, per client, immediatelyUsers, then Profile, immediately
Use whenThe client supports a browser sign-inNo browser flow, or the site is not publicly reachable

A missing Application Passwords section on the profile screen has more than one possible cause: WordPress hides it on plain HTTP outside a local development environment, a plugin or host can switch it off through WordPress's availability filters, and it can be unavailable for a particular user. Check HTTPS first, then those filters and the user, before assuming any one of them. For a caller with no browser, a GoBuildWP access token is the narrower alternative to a password: it can expire, be limited to chosen abilities, and be capped below the site's safety profile. Details: OAuth setup and Application Passwords.

Prompt injection

Retrieved text is data, even when it reads like an order

Posts, comments, form entries, product descriptions and tool output can carry malicious or mistaken instructions. They may shape what the agent proposes. They cannot change what the profile allows.

  • Every typed input is validated on the server
  • Keep credentials out of prompts; inspect outputs for sensitive values. Redaction is field/pattern based and cannot certify arbitrary returned text.
  • Critical operations need their own explicit confirmation
  • Test injected content against disabled and denied abilities

From the GoBuildWP Free 1.18.6 ability reference. Confirm means an explicit confirmation is required; by default the agent can supply the flag. A person approves mode and any enabled Pro policy add their own gates. The user's capabilities and per-ability controls still apply in every column. How the profiles work.

Checklist

WordPress MCP security checklist

Fifteen checks in the order you need them. Test revocation and one recovery on staging before the first live session.

  • Before you connect

    • Use a dedicated identity meeting manage_options on a single site or superadmin on multisite; an ordinary Editor is insufficient
    • Prefer OAuth; name any Application Password after the client and machine
    • Explicitly select Read Only for inspection; Production Safe is the default
    • Keep credentials out of prompts, repositories and shared drives
    • Take a backup you have restored at least once
  • While it runs

    • Review the active safety profile, credential scope and profile ceiling before writes
    • Switch off abilities the workflow does not need
    • Inspect optional preview and human approval settings; neither should be assumed enabled
    • Confirm destructive and critical calls deliberately
    • Read the change ledger after each session; redaction is best effort
  • When something goes wrong

    • Revoke first: Connected Apps for OAuth, Users then Profile for passwords
    • Keep redacted evidence of what was called and returned
    • Check which external systems already acted before retrying
    • Roll back supported changes from the ledger
    • Rotate any credential that may have been exposed

Beyond the checklist

Why some read-only tools are still locked away

A read is not automatically harmless. GoBuildWP treats wppilot/read-file and wppilot/list-directory as Developer Full Access only, even though neither writes anything, because on a lower profile they could open wp-config.php and hand the database password and the authentication salts to whatever model is on the other end. Read Only and Production Safe promise no server filesystem access, and the plugin keeps that promise rather than letting the risk class of a single call decide.

The same thinking shapes wppilot/database-query, which is also limited to Developer Full Access. Even there it runs one SELECT inside a read-only transaction that is rolled back, caps the rows it returns, and refuses the tables that hold users, user meta and options, so a question about orders or posts cannot turn into a dump of password hashes or API keys stored in settings. Reads of this kind are written to the change ledger as audit entries, which is how you find out afterwards what an agent looked at, not only what it changed.

Give a reporting agent a token capped below the site

The safety profile is a site-wide setting, so on its own it cannot make one caller weaker than another. Access tokens created on the Connect screen can. In current releases of GoBuildWP Free a token can carry an expiry, a list of the abilities or categories it may use, and a profile ceiling. The ceiling only ever lowers what the site allows: a token capped at Read Only on a Production Safe site reads, and a token capped at Production Safe on a Read Only site still only reads. Anything outside the token's scope is refused and also hidden from its tool list, so the model is never tempted by a tool it cannot use.

OAuth sign-ins, Application Passwords and WP-CLI requests are governed by the site profile unchanged. That makes a capped, expiring token the right credential for an unattended job such as a weekly content report or a CI check, while a person working interactively signs in with OAuth. Every change a token makes carries the token's name in the ledger, which keeps the audit trail readable when several agents share one site.

Rehearse an incident on staging before the first live write

Revocation and undo are only useful if you have already watched them work. On a staging copy, run this drill once per client you plan to trust with writes, and keep a note of what you saw.

  • With Read Only selected, ask the agent to edit a disposable test page. Expect a server-side refusal and confirm in wp-admin that the page did not change.
  • Switch to Production Safe and let it make one small edit. Find the entry with wppilot/list-changes and note the session it belongs to.
  • Call wppilot/list-sessions with that session_id to see what an undo would do right now, then run wppilot/undo-session. It refuses, listing the conflicts, if anything else touched the target after the agent did.
  • Revoke the client in Connected Apps, or delete the token, and confirm the next call fails instead of quietly working from a cached session.
  • Export the drill with wppilot/export-changes. Before-images are left out and known secrets are redacted, but the rows can still carry site content from inputs and results, so read the file before attaching it to a ticket.

Does GoBuildWP Cloud change the threat model?

A direct connection has no relay: the client talks to your WordPress install and nothing else. GoBuildWP Cloud is optional and adds one party, so it is worth knowing exactly what that party holds. When a site connects, the site itself creates a key for Cloud and sends it server to server; you never copy it and Cloud stores it encrypted. Cloud keeps your account details, each site's URL, name, versions and health, which AI apps you connected, and a log of gateway calls with the tool name, site, outcome and time. It does not store page, post or product content, and it never holds a WordPress password.

The access chosen at connect time, Read Only or Production Safe, is the most Cloud can ever use on that site, and each AI app can be limited to particular sites or made read-only on top of that. Every call still ends on the site under its own profile, confirmations and ledger. Either side can cut the link: removing the site in Cloud or under GoBuildWP, Connect in wp-admin kills the key.

FAQ

WordPress MCP security questions

New to the protocol? Start with what a WordPress MCP server is.

Does MCP bypass WordPress permissions?

Not with GoBuildWP. Every remote call authenticates as a WordPress user and is checked against that user's capabilities and the server-side policy. A client request cannot grant capabilities the user and the active controls do not allow.

Can prompt injection enable a disabled tool?

No. Untrusted content can influence what the model proposes, but it cannot change server authorization. Disabled abilities, WordPress capabilities, the safety profile, confirmation and approval gates all sit outside the prompt.

Does any part of this run on a GoBuildWP server?

Not on a direct connection. Both MCP endpoints are served by your own WordPress install: /wp-json/mcp/wppilot-oauth for OAuth clients and /wp-json/mcp/wppilot for Application Password and access-token clients, with no GoBuildWP-hosted service between the client and the site, and the plugin ships no model of its own. GoBuildWP Cloud is the exception you opt into: if you connect a site to it, AI clients call Cloud and Cloud relays the call to the site, as the Cloud section of this page explains. Either way, your AI client and its model provider receive prompts and tool results.

How long is a leaked credential useful?

It depends which one leaked, and this is the main argument for OAuth. An access token is valid for one hour and a refresh token for fourteen days. A WordPress Application Password does not expire at all and stays valid until someone revokes it.

How do I revoke one client without disturbing the others?

From the WordPress Connected Apps screen, which lists every application holding an authorization for that user. Revoking invalidates its tokens immediately. It does not delete the WordPress user, change the safety profile, or undo work already recorded in the change ledger.

Why is there only one OAuth scope?

Because scopes would be a second, weaker copy of a permission model WordPress already has. The single mcp scope carries no authority on its own: the user's capabilities, the enabled abilities and the active safety profile decide every call, so a token never grants more than the person who authorized it had.

Why does a call fail with 401 on a site running Wordfence?

First inspect the actual response and authentication route. Wordfence or another filter can disable Application Passwords; GoBuildWP's diagnostics can identify a recognized filter and setting. OAuth does not depend on Application Passwords, but changing authentication does not fix a proxy, WAF, rewrite or reachability problem. Verify the generated endpoint from the client's execution environment.

Can an agent work with my security plugin?

Free exposes supported status reads for Wordfence and Solid Security. Pro adds confirmed hardening, selected host or IP controls and scan triggers where the installed plugin supports them. Some settings writes have before-images; scan-start is irreversible. Recognized lockout guards and selected endpoint probes reduce specific risks but do not guarantee access through every proxy or WAF. Independently check public access and retain recovery access outside the agent connection.

Is the Claude Desktop connector bundle safe to share?

No. The .mcpb bundle embeds the plaintext Application Password so the connector installs without prompts, which makes the file equivalent to the credential itself. Keep it out of repositories and shared drives, and delete it once the connector is installed.

Does rollback make every operation safe?

No. Rollback covers supported reversible state only. Email, payments, fulfilment, indexing, webhooks, caches and third-party systems may already have acted and need their own evidence or correction.

Start read-only. Prove a refusal. Then expand.

A safe first session checks both halves: the read you asked for works, and the privileged call you did not ask for is refused.
